Open Question: Best places to move to in California for a young woman who just graduated college. How should I go about this?

I graduate from Georgia Southern University in December and I cannot wait to get out of the south. I want to move to California, I really would like some advice on how to go about this. Where is a good place to live? i.e affordable, safe, and not away from people. I don't want to be 'out there', nor do I want to live in the heart of the city. I'm from Atlanta, and there we have 'metro Atlanta', like Marietta, Gwinnett, Stone Mountain, etc which are decent places to live.
